Interview with a professional-

Focus on Iliana Morton Photography

Tell me a little about yourself-
I grew up in San Diego, I got my first camera at age 6 or 7 on a visit to Disneyland, a Fuji 110. Took tons of photos with it! I took photography classes in high school and in college I studied art history and used that to focus on photography. I got a job with a local production company and was booked for a lot of proms, bar mitzvahs and parties.

What type of photography do you do most?
Weddings and engagement sessions

What other things do you shoot?
Some family portraits, city scapes- living in San Diego the downtown scenery is always changing, especially the "artwork" so it is great to go on a walking tour with the camera.

What are your favorite types of shoots and why?
Engagement sessions. The couple can relax and we can get to know each other and have fun, there is no timeline like during a wedding and no pressure.

What would you say is the most challenging part of being a photographer, for you?
Right before I start a shoot I get a slight case of nerves, there is always a "what if" in my mind. Once I start the shoot and am on task, everything is fine. It's just at the beginning.

Describe your photographic style, and how it developed-
I would say my style is a little modern, slightly edgy, but still natural. I prefer natural light instead of forced, I love to play up bright colors. It developed through my study of graphic and interior design and once I started manipulating colors it grew from there.

Tell me about a favorite shoot you did recently-
I did a downtown engagement shoot for a fellow photographer and her fiance. We had a great time wandering the city finding cool locations.

Do you feel your rates are competitive in today's market?
Definitely!

Do you offer studio sessions?
Not currently, I prefer natural light and prefer to shoot outdoors.

What equipment do you use?
A Canon 60D and an older Olympus to let in lots of light.

What is your favorite movie?
Breakfast at Tiffany's

What is your favorite color?
Red
